What do you want to be when you grow up?

Friday, March 7, 2014

Every couple of months, or let's be honest, every other week I get into a funk where I wonder what in the world I'm going to do with my life. I'm in my mid-twenties (a quarter of a century -so my 90 year-old grandmother says), and I have no clue. And in some ways, I look at this situation and think, 'What a childish thing to ask," but ask it they do.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Your parents ask this when you come home from college. Your grandparents ask this around the holiday season. Your uncles and aunts from out of state ask you this during family reunions. It's all the exact same question, but the answer can be one of two things: an honest answer of 'I don't know' or your goals tied with your bucket list.

Going back in time to when you were a kid, adults asked you the same question, but this time, you were allowed to dream and imagine the impossible, which they encouraged. If you wanted to be an astronaut, by God, that was an attainable dream.

But now you are an adult, and you want to be a writer, or pick another career that's challenging to make money from, and what do they ask you? How will you support yourself? Will you really be able to pay off your outrageous student debt? Where will you live -in a cardboard box until some publisher pities you or you marry some billionaire?

Yeah, welcome to the land of adulthood where you actually do have to think about all those things and still try to make your dreams reality. But whatever happened to making yourself a better person? Or leaving a world that is better because you lived in it and left footprints on foreign soil? What mark did you leave on the world?

Recently, I have been struggling with the idea of not only desiring my goals but actually making them attainable and working towards that goal. I want to be a writer and a reader, and I want to discover new things, whether that's through traveling or sitting in a classroom. I want to take part in a community of people that loves the written word (much like the book blogger community). I want to travel to places that are only seen in pictures. I want to experience love. I want to be in a financially secure place where I can be overly generous. I want to be a person that leaves this world in better condition than when I came into it.

That is my dream and I will make it a reality.

What are your dreams? What do you want to do with your life? What kind of mark do you want to leave behind?
