Why I chose this book:
After devouring These Broken Stars, I needed This Shattered World like I needed air. Luckily I didn't have to wait for it to be released like everyone else who read These Broken Stars as soon as it released. As soon as I bought it, I began reading voraciously.

Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met.

Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet's rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents.

Rebellion is in Flynn's blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion.

Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war. (Goodreads)

My Bookish Thoughts:
This was a different book for me. I was expecting to fall in love with this book as fiercely as I fell in love with TBS. This was a book that had way more action than the last. I think that's what kept me as engaged as I was.

I really liked how the authors went in-depth about Avon and the difficulties faced on that planet. The setting and world-building was superb and the difference between the government and the rebels was well done!

I think my favorite part about this book was Tarver. I missed Tarver and his sassy wit like crazy, so when he made an appearance, I was extremely please. Though I enjoyed this book overall, this book lacked in my opinion. I don't mind that this one wasn't as much about the romance, but I wanted there to be more of a tie between Jubilee and Flynn. I mean... it didn't have to be super romantic like Tarver and Lilac, but I was expecting something a bit more.

I will say that I enjoyed that the female character was more of a complex character than Lilac was in the last book. So this alone made me happy.

Overall, it was a great sequel that leaves room for a lot of love for the final installment, which I seriously can't wait for!

I gave this book 4 stars.

  1. I read These Broken Stars earlier this year and I LOVED it. And I have absolutely no idea why I didn't follow it up with an immediate read of This Shattered World. I'll have to make sure this one makes it onto my TBR for this year!

  2. I didn't love this one as much as THESE BROKEN STARS, either. It was just missing some of the magic that had be so completely captivated and in love when reading TBS, so I was a bit disappointed.

I definitely loved seeing Tarver again, and his Skype call with Lilac was SO CUTE. I just wanted to go back and read TBS as soon as I read those parts again. Those are are such a cute ship.

I did like how badass Jubilee was, and I was also a bit disappointed that there wasn't a more tangible link between Lee and Flynn. I think because Lilac and Tarver's relationship was so amazing, it left me with really high expectations.

Even so, I really liked it and can't wait for the final book!

    Great review ^.^

  3. I too was a little disappointed with this book, however I ended up loving it. I just wanted more space I guess, that's what I loved about the first book. A spaceship crashing into an unknown planet? How cool is that?!
I remember feeling like the middle of this dragged out a little however I was glad I kept reading because now I am super excited for the third book!
