What Books Would be on Your Syllabus if You Taught YAL?

Tuesday, August 25, 2015
Top Ten is hosted by the lovely ladies at The Broke and the Bookish

1. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
Though this was not my favorite book at all, actually I didn't really like it, but I still acknowledge that it has some excellent things to say. As a girl who lives in Oklahoma, I think it's really important to teach in a YAL class.

2. Noggin by John Corey Whaley
It's no secret that this man is my John Green. My favorite. I would teach the idea of mortality and the them of existentialism.

3. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
When teaching this book, I would probably touch on the fact that it uses Greek mythology to speak to middle grade students. I would touch on the idea of the unlikely hero and how Percy's human short-comings (like dyslexia) becomes a strength in the book.

4. Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan
First off, I fully believe that this book could change the world. So this is one of my two LGBTQ+ books that I would whole-heartedly teach and enjoy. I would talk about the idea of the Greek Chorus used throughout and the diversity of the stories told in the book.

5. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
I would really like to touch on the narrator of this book, why Zusak used Death as the story-teller and why. Also I would touch on the importance of knowledge and books and the act of reading as a form of liberation and freedom.

Top Ten Books I Absolutely NEED to See in Movie Form

Tuesday, June 2, 2015
Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the ladies at The Broke and the Bookish

 1. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
Dear God, I would LOVE to see this on screen, except this MUST be done in TV show format by HBO or STARZ. I can't bear to watch it any other way.

2. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
I really don't know how this adaptation would look like, but I think it would be cool to see someone try.

3. Dumplin' by Julie Murphy
I loved this book so much. It hit me in the personal feels. It would be glorious to see this in movie form.

4. Red Rising by Pierce Brown
I would LOVE to see this in film/show format, but it would have to be done VERY well, with a very high budget.

5. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
Again, the only way I could watch this is if it was done by HBO or STARZ and showed all the good bits gory and otherwise!

6. Eragon by Christopher Paolini
I know, I know... you guys say that there's already a movie, but I refuse to acknowledge its terrible existence. So I am calling for a remake!

6. A Voice in the Wind by Francine Rivers
I think this could be an absolutely beautiful story brought to film; however, this is a Christian book, and the only way that it could be done well is if it included that part, which won't ever happen but doesn't mean I'm giving up hope.

7. Black Ice by Becca Fitzpatrick
I think this book would make for an EXCELLENT adaption. It could easily be transferred to movie form, and I think it would make an excellent thriller.

8. A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray
I think the world always needs a good time traveling story.

9. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
Apparently the rights for this book have already been optioned, but I would still love to see this book in film format; howver, I'm not sure exactly how it will look.

Top Ten Books I LOVED that People Have Recommended to Me

Tuesday, May 19, 2015
Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the lovely ladies at The Broke and the Bookish

 1. Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien
My dad was the one to introduce me to LOTR. I was 8 years old, and it forever changed my life. I found my love for epic fantasy and I was never the same after that.

2. The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
This was a book recommended by my sister. She's not much of a reader, but she loved this book, and I loved it just as much as I read it.

3. A Voice in the Wind by Francine Rivers
I didn't think that Roman historical fiction was my thing. And that's what I told my best friend when she recommended that I read it. This has been in my top 5 favorite books since my junior year in high school and I don't think it will change.

This was another recommendation from my dad after I read LOTR. I devoured this entire series in 5th grade. My favorite of the series was actually The Silver Chair.

5. The Nancy Drew Files by Caroline Keene
I freaking ate these up in 4th grade. Every week, I would get a new one and read the crap out of it. Mysteries were my favorites when I was a child.

Top Ten Favorite Quotes from YA Books

Tuesday, April 14, 2015
Top Ten is hosted by the lovely girls at The Broke and the Brookish.

1. Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan
"We do not start as dust. We do not end as dust. We make more than dust.
That's all we ask of you. Make more than dust."

2. The Assassin and the Underworld by Sarah J. Maas
"'What's your name?" he asked above the roar of the music.
She leaned close. "My name is Wind," she whispered. "And Rain. And Bone and Dust. My name is a snippet of a half-remembered song."

3. Never Never by Tarryn Fisher and Colleen Hoover
"How odd to be made of flesh, balanced on bone, and filled with a soul you've never met."

Top Ten Characters I Want to Check-in On.

Tuesday, April 7, 2015
As always, Top Ten is hosted by the lovely girls at The Broke and the Bookish.

1. Keladry from Protector of the Small Quartet by Tamora Pierce
I feel like by the end of that series, there was still so much left in her story line. Sometimes I just have to satisfy myself with fanfiction or a dream.

2. Nikolai from Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
Nikolai was seriously my favorite character in this series and I want so badly for him to have a happily ever after. I just love him so much!

3. Bobby Pendragon from the Pendragon series by D.J. MacHale
This is one of my all time favorite series, and the ending of it wrecked me. So to go back and visit this world(s) would be like coming home.
