Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwine

Though I’ve heard some not so great things about Redwine’s writing, I thought I would give this a chance. I have been recently getting into a lot of retellings and even writing academic papers over them (you can check those out here), so I figured this one would be a good start for me. And can we talk about that cover? AMAZING!

I feel like I need to start off with the fact that I DNF’d this book at 17%. I just couldn’t do it guys. The writing was not what I had expected. There was such a large fissure between me, the reader, and the main character. I did not care about her, and I tried… I really really tried.

I felt like she could do so much more with her characters and some of the experiences they have endured. She had ample opportunity to make me care for her characters, but at every turn everything felt so very flat… and eerily similar to Snow White and the Huntsman movie, but I won’t get into that.

Overall, I sadly didn’t enjoy it so I have to give it a low rating.
I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I gave this book 1 star.
