Merry Christmas Ya Filthy Animal + AWESOME GIVEAWAY

Friday, December 11, 2015

I am, generally speaking, the worst gift-giver on the planet. Seriously, I'm the ultimate worst, but this year, I have had so much fun buying gifts for friends and family.

As most of you who read my blog frequently, you will know that this year has been one of the most difficult years of my life thus far. Not only that but working and going to graduate school full time on top of living in a state in which I have no family has been doubly difficult. However, despite all the bad and negativity, I can say that I found strength to get through this year. Yes, it's been hard, but it's also been good in some ways too.

Because of these difficulties I have experienced, I have come to realize that you really never know what's going on with the strangers around you. The people who cash you out at Target, or the guy who helps you find a book at Barnes & Noble, they are all going through things too. They are all trying to traverse this crazy thing called life, and sometimes they fail just like me.

I got to meet Stephanie Perkins + GIVEAWAY

Friday, April 3, 2015

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to meet Stephanie Perkins at my local library in Oklahoma. I have only read Lola, and I'm working on the rest of her books, but I was still beyond excited to meet her in person and get her to sign all of my books.

I went to the signing with my friend Addison, who loves Stephanie Perkins's books to death, and it was just all around fun! The Metropolitan Library gave out free copies of Lola....after that, we were just over the moon with excitement!

This was one of the smallest signings I've ever been to, and for it to be so small for Stephanie Perkins of all people is crazy to me! But I LOVED it! There was probably about 30-40 max, and because it was such a small group, there was this intimacy of sorts.

Review: Death Marked by Leah Cypess +GIVEAWAY

Monday, March 23, 2015
Why I chose this book:
I finished Death Sworn about a couple of months ago, and knew that I had to get Death Marked ASAP, so I requested an eARC. Luckily, the publisher was kind enough to grant me access, and I devoured the book in a single sitting. I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of he book or the content of my review.

Death Marked by Leah Cypess
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Release Date: March 3rd, 2015
Format: eARC
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
B&N  ||  Amazon  ||  Book Depository

Synopsis:
At seventeen, Ileni lost her magical power and was exiled to the hidden caves of the assassins. She never thought she would survive long. But she discovered she was always meant to end up, powerless, in the caves as part of an elder sorcerer's plan to destroy the evil Empire they'd battled so long. Except that Ileni is not an assassin, and she doesn't want to be a weapon. And, after everything, she's not even sure she knows the truth. Now, at the very heart of the Empire--its academy for sorcerers--the truth is what she seeks. What she finds challenges every belief she holds dear--and it threatens her fledgling romance with the young master of assassins. (Goodreads)

North Texas Teen Book Festival Event +GIVEAWAY

Friday, March 13, 2015
So let's chat about one of the best bookish events I've ever been to: the North Texas Teen Book Festival.

This festival was put on by the AMAZING people who work at the Irving Public Library as well as many other people and companies who supplied either time or money to make sure that this event ran smoothly.

There were well over 50 authors at this event and about 5000 attendees. Talk about a packed house, y'all! And it was amazing!

Needless to say, it was glorious! I got to meet up with some amazing friends, bloggers, and authors. So let's start from the beginning. Me and a couple of my college friends got a hotel together but we decided since we were in Dallas for a book event, why don't we do something bookish like go to Barnes & Noble on a Friday night... because that's just what you do.

It just so happened that A.G. Howard, author of the Splintered series, was signing at the B&N in Frisco.

We all got our book signed and met up with the wonderful ladies, Katie from Polished Page-Turners and Mary from Mary Had a Little Book Blog. You guys, these ladies are downright fabulous! If you don't already follow them, you DEFINITELY should!

That evening, Mary surprised me with the most amazing gift I've ever received for my birthday:

That's right! She snagged an ARC of ACOTAR from one of the publishers at the event who was setting up for NTTBF the night before!

You guys, I screamed in the middle of Barnes & Noble and did a happy dance. I actually very nearly cried I was so stinking happy. So to Mary, THANK YOU! You are an absolute gem!

I'm still not over it! I've already finished the book and it was so dang good I just can't wait for the next one and it's going to be at least a year and half! Cue the future tears and feels fest!

That evening we all got some dinner at IHOP and chatted it up. Have I told you how great these gals are? Because they are seriously awesome!

Needless to say, that night I got only a little sleep seeing as there was absolutely no way for me to go to sleep with ACOTAR merely feet away. So I started the book that night. heh! ;)

It's my Birthday!! +GIVEAWAY

Saturday, February 28, 2015

So today is a special day for me...

That's right, today is my birthday, and I'm officially 25... yes, I know, I'm a quarter of a century. I should feel so old hahaha!

Monday, October 13, 2014

Today OS&B is happy to receive the Martyr Blog Tour hosted by Me, My Shelf, and I! Author A.R. Kahler stopped by the blog to visit and chat about books that have influenced him as a writer. While I have yet to read Martyr, it definitely looks like a book I will be checking out!

Publisher: Spencer Hill Press

For years, the Hunters have used this magic to keep the monsters at bay, but it's never been enough to truly win the war. Humans are losing.
When Tenn falls prey to an incubus named Tomás and his terrifying Kin, Tenn learns there's more to this than a fight for survival. He's a pawn in a bigger game, one with devastating consequences. If he doesn't play his part, it could cost him his life, his lover and his world

Banned Books Week! + #GIVEAWAY

Friday, September 26, 2014

So this week, as you probably know, is Banned Books week. As an advocate for literacy and literature in general, this is a week that is very near and dear to my heart. I've attended and worked at schools that employ all sorts of censorship rules. I've been at schools where teachers had to stop reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to their fifth grade class and take out The Hunger Games out of their seventh grade classroom library. I will say that most of these are because of parental complaints, but even still, you can go even further and talk about the new editions of Huckleberry Finn and the censoring of the N-word.

Why can't we teach our children how to think instead of what to think? Why can't we teach them to decide for themselves whether they agree with something or not? Why do we instead think that limiting their access to works that may alter the way they think is more preemptive instead of teaching them to decide for themselves?

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY! So here are 4 GIVEAWAYS!

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

Hello loves! Today I am celebrating my 26th birthday!! As you can see, my very unenthused corgi and I are celebrating with books, sunshine, and smiles. (Well, I am. He could care less unless my birthday comes with a snack treat.) Amanda is also over, and we are celebrating BFF style (and by that I mean talking books and sitting on our laptops). It has been a great day, and I am continually reminded that I am loved and cared for.

Today I also want to share the love! I've spent the past six months loving this wonderful blogging community, and now I want to give back. Today I have FOUR giveaways! While you can enter all four giveaways you can only win one stack, so choose wisely! This giveaway is limited to followers in the United States, because I am a broke bitch. Hopefully we will do an international giveaway soon!

Another Awesome Author Event at IPL +GIVEAWAY

Friday, July 18, 2014

Last week, Jamie and I went to another amazingly superb author event at Irving Public Library. We had an absolutely awesome panel that included Julie Murphy (Side Effects May Vary), Lisa Stasse (Forsaken trilogy), Veronica Rossi (Under the Never Sky trilogy), Sherry Thomas (The Burning SKy, The Perilous Sea), and John Corey Whaley (Where Things Come Back, Noggin). The moderator was Mary from Mary Had a Little Book Blog.

First off, this was the funniest panel I have ever attended Corey, Sherry, and Julie were absolutely hilarious in every way. Seriously, one of the best panels. They kept things light and fun while also hitting on some really cool things about the writing craft and book business.

North Texas Teen Book Festival info + GIVEAWAY

Sunday, June 29, 2014
I saw a post today from Mary Had a Little Book Blog about the wonderful-ness that is the Irving Public Library and the awesome North Texas Teen Book Festival that they are trying to Kickstart. So let me share with you all this goodness!

What are the need-to-knows?
It's hosted by the Irving Public Library in Irving, Texas on March 7th 2015 at the Irving Convention Center. There are going to be 25+ authors in attendance and YOU!

What's so awesome about the Irving Public Library?
IPL is known for their awesome YA events. As a native Texan, I have been to a few of their events including The Dark Days Tour which included authors Kelley Armstrong, Kiera Cass, Kimberley Dertin, and Danielle Paige. I also attended the launch party for Julie Murphy's Side Effects May Vary, not to mention that I plan on attending an event in a couple weeks that includes Sherry Thomas, John Corey Whaley, Julie Murphy, Gail Carriger, Lisa Stasse, and Veronica Rossi. When they put on events, they mean serious business, and it's always one of the most fun experiences! The librarians at IPL are fantastic (especially teen librarian Kristin Trevino)! You won't meet a more dedicated and enthusiastic lot of book lovers.

Tell me more about NTTBF
IPL is taking the next step in actually putting on a festival. This is going to be their first time endeavoring to put on a YA festival but they are a public library system, which means they need a bit of help in executing this awesome plan. That's where we book-lovers come in! IPL is currently holding a Kickstarter campaign to raise $10,000 to go to covering the festival costs. There are only two weeks left and they still need $4,000 to reach their goal.

Review + GIVEAWAY: Deviation by Christine Manzari

Wednesday, June 18, 2014
Why I chose this book:
The author, Christine Manzari, was the one to approach me about reading and reviewing her book. I was going through a really emphatic dystopian stage, and she was more than kind to send me a copy of her self published debut. I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Deviation by Christine Manzari
Publisher: CreateSpace
Publish Date: August 9, 2013
Format: Paperback
Genre: Young Adult, Dystopia
B&N || Amazon || Indiebound

Synopsis:
Being a Sophisticate of the Program seems like it’d be a pretty sweet deal: a little genetic alteration and anyone can be smarter, faster, and stronger. It’s a dream come true. All you have to give up is your freedom.

Cleo is a Sophisticate and she has a bright future in the Program. But she has a secret. When she gets upset, bad things happen. Explosive things. Things she can’t control.

When her secret is discovered, she’s sent to the Academy to train in the military branch of the Program. She’s destined to be a human weapon in the war that’s been going on since Wormwood occurred nearly 30 years ago. She soon learns that although her ability is unique, there are others like her — other Sophisticates with lethal skills and odd code names like Archerfish and Mimic Octopus.

Immersed in a dangerous game of supernatural powers and dubious motives, Cleo doesn’t know who to trust. Ozzy, the annoyingly attractive cadet who has perfect aim in weapons class and deviant lips behind closed doors, begs her not to use her powers. Spring Cleaning +GIVEAWAY

Friday, April 4, 2014

Seeing as I have recently moved and the seasons are changing, what better time to have a spring cleaning!

After moving, I realized that I have a lot of stuff -stuff which is mostly comprised of books. I had about 5-6 tubs full of books to lug home. Talk about bad gas mileage. But as many of you know and can identify with, you can't live without your books, and for me, it's just comforting to see them on my shelves.

Sadly, I don't have three shelving units anymore; I only have the one, so I had to be extremely picky on which ones I put on this bookshelf. But as I went through my book boxes, I found books that I no longer cared that much for, but I knew other people might cherish. So that's why I decided to do the spring cleaning GIVEAWAY!

These are the books for the Giveaway *US only*:

Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (Hardback)
The Maze Runner by James Dashner
Dragonswood by Janet Lee Carey
